Design of a Tailings Desulphurization System and a Thickened Tailings Surface Disposal System

Musselwhite Mine, Opapimiskan Lake, Ontario, Canada

Client Goldcorp Canada Ltd.
Industries Mining
Services Tailings Management, Contracting /Construction Services, Wastewater Treatment/Process Engineering, Sustainability

Assignment
The disposal of mine tailings and other mine waste materials has historically constituted a large portion of the costs and potential liability risk of a mining operation. Coupled with the increased environmental liabilities that go along with traditional placement strategies means that new and existing mines require alternative placement strategies that more effectively meet environmental and regulatory requirements.

Our Role
Paste or thickened tailings technology allows for a smaller tailings impoundment area, increased water management capabilities and less environmental impact. With this in mind, Golder Paste Technology Ltd. (Golder PasteTec) was engaged by Goldcorp Canada Ltd. to complete the detailed engineering for a tailings desulphurization system and a thickened tailings surface disposal system at their Musselwhite Mine to address these issues.
