Assignment
With existing landfill at 80% of approved capacity, the City of Barrie took an innovative approach to complete the development of its landfill including design-build of a 2.5 hectare landfill cell and a 1.7 hectare compost pad with associated stormwater controls.
Our Role
The design to upgrade the landfill incorporates reclamation of waste, which is the process of screening excavated waste fill to remove the fine soil fraction and replacing it, using a greater level of compaction and less soil cover. The re-engineering also incorporated one of the first dual-layered synthetic liner landfill cells in Ontario, complete with a leachate collection system coupled with a purge well hydraulic barrier. The new cell will provide groundwater protection, while giving the City up to seven years of new capacity at current infilling rates due, in large part to the substantial recovery of landfill space by re-using fines from the reclamation process. The project received an award of merit in the project management, studies & research category from the Consulting Engineers of Ontario.
