Rock Mechanics Services and Innovative Solutions Featured in Golder’s Q3 Edition of Technically Speaking

Sep 12, 2012

The 3rd quarter issue of Golder Associates' global Technically Speaking (TS) newsletter, focused on "Rock Mechanics", is now available.

In today's world, projects come under increased scrutiny due to environmental and social awareness, take longer to develop, and are technically complex to build. Often, projects are located in more challenging environments, such as remote areas or densely populated urban zones and the price tag of doing business has significantly increased over recent decades.

Given the size of investment involved and greater public interest and awareness, our clients are increasingly concerned about assessing and managing risk related to health and safety; project delays, abandonment or shutdown; and asset impairment from damaged infrastructure or, in the case of mining, diluted or sterilised ore reserves.

While the science of rock mechanics is applied to civil engineering works as well as mines, there are fundamental differences between the two when it comes to the active life of excavations and the levels of acceptable risk.

Risk assessment rests on adequate evaluation of rock mass behaviour and response to excavation based on appropriate analysis and modelling methods. Thus, initial site evaluation and rock mass characterisation form the foundation of any mining or civil project.

Our clients turn to us as rock engineering specialists when they want the most comprehensive package of assessment and analysis available, as well as more than 50 years of experience working around the globe in rock engineering design and project management.

You are invited to read the newsletter and to share it with others who may find it of interest. Check out the online version of this issue, as well as the interactive flip book on golder.com. If you would like to receive an electronic notice when Technically Speaking becomes available each quarter, please subscribe here.

The 4th quarter 2012 issue of Technically Speaking will be focused on "Energy and Carbon Management". Please look for this issue in December.
